“I have always felt that an amputee’s limits are almost zero with mental attitude and physical limitations, not related to amputation, being the only things holding them back. Educating prospective physical therapists with an attitude that amputees can do most anything they want and providing the therapists with the education to understand mechanical walking is what makes mobility for the amputee happen.” Henry Brown.

The University of Kentucky Physical Therapy School has a wonderful and far reaching “Prosthetic Section” for the students. Each year of undergraduate classes start with the basics: wrapping stumps, understanding how prosthetics work, and the proper gaits. Special Instructor, Dennis Lesch, handles the prosthetic section of their education.

Dennis’ wife is an above the knee amputee so he has first hand living knowledge of the physical and mental aspects of an amputee’s adjustment to living with a prosthesis. Although prosthetics are just a small part of the therapy students’ studies, Dennis makes it most memorable.

Amputee Golf Charities has been a part of Dennis’ program for several years, volunteering their services as demonstrators and showing them that attitude has a lot to do with recovery as well as being aware of the needs and individuality of each amputee.

The included photos were taken from a session on June 7, 2007.
